Every Friday, The Citizen features a pet available for adoption from the Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York.
This week, we spotlight Penny.
Q: Who is your best friend?
A: Everyone is my best friend! I mean, who doesn’t want to be a kitten’s BFF? All of our visitors love me immediately, the staff and volunteers are really kind to me and the cats and kittens in here look after me and keep me from getting into trouble. I am a lucky boy because the whole world is my BFF!
Q: Do you have a job at the shelter?
A: Well, I don’t at the moment. However, I am thinking about becoming a personal trainer for the cats here in my room. Did you know that orange tabby cats are known for their good appetites and therefore are prone to put on weight and, in some instances, can become obese? This is a fact, and I want to avoid that at all costs. So if I get up a workout routine for my feline friends, that will help me from packing on the pounds! Speaking of pounds, you might like to join us! LOL.
Q: If you could meet someone famous, who would that be?
A: Perhaps one of my feline colleagues has already told you about Stubbs? If not, Stubbs is the honorary mayor of Talkeetna, Alaska. Talkeetna has no human mayor, and Stubbs was offered the job to attract tourists. Apparently he has been so successful that he’s kept his office for many years. Every afternoon, His Honor is given catnip-infused water out of a wine glass at a local restaurant. I think Mr. Stubbs must be very famous, and I would love to meet him.
Q: If you could visit any place in the world, where would that be?
A: I don’t think I’m up to international travel yet, and I don’t have a passport, either. So I’m thinking someplace warm and somewhat exotic, but still within the confines of the great 50 states. I’m thinking maybe Honolulu. And, while I’m there, I could visit the Hawaii Cat Cafe! I understand they have kitty yoga classes there. I could learn some things and add them to my personal trainer routine. Yes, Honolulu is on my bucket list.
Q: Do you have an interesting fact to share?
A: I do. Well it’s not really a fact, but here goes. There is an old tale that when Baby Jesus could not sleep as a child, an orange tabby cat found him, curled up next to him and began to purr. Jesus loved the cat so much that Mary kissed the cat on the forehead and thanked him for taking care of Baby Jesus so he could sleep. That kiss branded the cat with an “M” marking on the forehead. We don’t know if this is true or not, but we tabbies do have an “M” marking on our foreheads, and it’s a great story to tell. I hope you liked it.
Q: Do you have any advice for our good Citizen readers?
A: I do! Please get your calendar and your pen and write this down. On Sunday, Nov. 18, my shelter people will be having Pet Photos with Santa at the beautiful Dickman Farms! Yes, this is true! It will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and all well-behaved pets and their people are invited. So save the date and gather up the fur-kids, other kiddos and granny too, and come to have a holiday photo taken. This event is a fundraiser for our shelter. For more information, check out our website (flspcaofcny.org) or our Facebook page, or call the shelter at (315) 253-5841 and talk to my shelter people. Thank you and love. Archie and friends.
