Wheat grass is considered a power food for humans, a favorite food for cats, and makes eco friendly Easter decor. How to Grow Wheat Grass At Home Wheat Grass is so easy to grow at home. It takes about a week from seed to plant. It’s also a forgiving plant, so even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can grow wheatgrass. Here’s what you’ll need: Supplies to Grow Wheat Grass Organic potting soil : For indoor plants, potting mix is better than just regular dirt from the backyard. It allows for aeration and drainage for the plant’s roots. Wheat Berries {soaked in water for 24 hours prior} OR grass seed would work fine, too. Wheat berries are the product of the wheat plant and are ground to make flour. They’re actually a pantry staple for us since I grind them to make whole wheat potato bread. Find wheatgrass seeds at a health food store or grocery store. Spray bottle : It’s important to keep the seeds and sprouts moist as they are growing. Spray them consistently to keep them moist. Pin this now to find it later Pin It Grow Your Own Wheat Grass The first step to growing your own wheatgrass is to soak the wheat seeds or berries overnight. Place them in a bowl and cover with water to soak. Make sure the water covers them completely as they will soak it all up. The next day, rinse the seeds and drain them. Plant them in a pot with good drainage holes. It’s possible they will already be sprouted. Keep them moist as they grow. Continue to water by spraying the seeds. I did this every day. Room temperature is fine for wheat grass – you don’t need heating mats or anything. How to Use Wheatgrass Grown at Home Wheatgrass is just as useful as it is beautiful. I love to use it as decor around the house, but it is also delicious in green smoothies or juices. Wheat grass is packed full of nutrients. Grow Your Own Easter Basket Grass I just hate that fake plastic Easter grass. Not only is it bad for the environment, it also gets everywhere and is a pain to clean up! A few years ago we grew our own Easter basket grass with wheat grass. This is a common tradition in Waldorf homeschooling circles, and it’s easy to see why! Reuse a basket around the house, pick up a cheap basket from the thrift store, or use a cute Easter basket. Line the bottom of the basket with plastic wrap or a basket liner. Add a couple inches of soil, and then top with the soaked wheat berries. Spritz the wheat seeds if they are no longer moist. Cover them with plastic wrap to keep the moisture in. If the wheat dries out it won’t grow, so keep spritzing as necessary. It takes just a few days to grow Easter grass. if you time it right, the Easter baskets will be full of gorgeously green and soft wheat grass on Easter morning. My kids loved it when we did this. Collect Easter eggs as usual or use it as part of your Easter decorations. Wheat Grass as Decor I love to use wheat grass all year round because it is so easy to grow. Soak the wheat grass seeds. Rinse and drain them, and then plant in a metal bucket or use an aesthetic basket. It looks really cute on side tables or mantles as part of your seasonal decor. How to Grow Wheat Grass for Cats Do you have cats that love your houseplants? Several houseplants are actually toxic for cats, but they love wheat grass! “Cat grass kits” are so expensive and totally unnecessary. Instead, grow your own wheat grass. The cats will love it! Start the process the same way by soaking the wheat berries. Spread them in a single layer on soil and keep them moist for first few days. Once the grass is about 5 inch tall, let your cats have at it. If they won’t leave your houseplants alone, give them their own. Growing wheat grass is easy, fun, and can be used in a lot of ways.
