Organic food exports up 39% in FY21 – The Week

According to the officials, organic products are currently exported from India only if they are produced, processed, packed and labelled according to the requirements of the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP). The NPOP has actually been implemented by APEDA since its inception in 2001 as alerted under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulations) Act, 1992.

The NPOP certification has been acknowledged by the European Union and Switzerland which makes it possible for India to export unprocessed plant products to these countries without the requirement of additional accreditation. During this duration, farmers need to adopt standard natural farming practices and keep their farms under the accreditation process. On effective conclusion, such farms can be accredited as organic after 2-3 years. The accreditation process also requires intricate documents and time to time verification by the accreditation authorities.
