Berkeley Organic Food Company Recalls Macadamia Nuts Over Possible Salmonella Published – A natural food company based in Berkeley announced a recall of macadamia nut products over the possibility of salmonella contamination. Living Tree Community Foods said the company’s organic macadamia nuts and organic macadamia butter are being recalled, according to a statement from the Food and Drug Administration. According to the company, the recalled macadamia nuts come in a 4 oz. clear plastic pouch and are marked with lot number 153442. The recalled macadamia butter comes in an 8 oz. glass jar. Lot numbers that were affected are 134415, 136215 and 101716. Living Tree said the recalled items were shipped from their facility from December 11, 2015 through February 3rd. Consumers are being urged to return the macadamia nut products to where they were purchased for a full refund. The company said they were made aware of possible salmonella contamination after FDA testing found the presence of salmonella in macadamia nuts from a supplier in Hawaii. Production of these products have been suspended as the company and regulators investigate. Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In young children, those with weakened immune systems and the elderly, the organism can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.
