A weekend of fall events are lined up at Greenhouse Garden Center in Carson City, beginning Friday and Saturday with an old fashioned apple cider press available for anyone with apples, plus a pumpkin growing contest and free pesticide waste collection on Saturday.
The wet winter and spring year has resulted in an abundance of apples throughout the region. With fall harvest winding down, Greenhouse Garden Center invites the public to bring their quartered and clean apples and clean containers (preferably containers with a wide mouth) for juicing direct from an old fashioned apple cider press.
Press days are Friday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Organizers advise to please arrive no later than 2:30 p.m. The event continues Saturday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also again, organizers advise to please arrive no later than 2:30 p.m.
The cost is $5 each press and $2 per jug of juice.
Also happening Saturday, Oct. 14 is a pumpkin growing contest. Celebrate fall pumpkins by entering your own at this free event. Bring your biggest, your smallest, or your most unusual pumpkin. There will be prizes!
Hours are 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for pumpkin drop-off. Pumpkin judging begins at 12 noon, where the winning pumpkin will be picked.
Finally, Greenhouse Garden Center, in partnership with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, will host a free pesticide waste collection Saturday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Protect the environment and discard your old, unwanted and unusable pesticides at the free collection event. Bring your insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, rodent baits and other pesticides to be properly disposed.
