Two Commanders of Hamas’ Military Wing Killed in Beirut Blast as Gaza Conflict Escalates A suspected drone strike by Israel at the Hamas political office in Beirut killed two commanders of Al-Qassam Brigades, which is the Palestinian group’s military wing, state Lebanese media cited Hamas as saying Tuesday. Hamas also confirmed the assassination of its deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri in the blast that targeted its office in a southern Beirut suburb, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported. Six people died in the explosion. Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister, Najib Mikati, condemned al-Arouri’s killing as an “Israeli crime” that he said aimed to draw Lebanon deeper into the Palestine-Israel conflict. A Sputnik correspondent has reported that in response to the blast, Lebanon has stepped up its military presence outside the Hamas office in Beirut after what is believed to be an Israeli drone strike. The Lebanese army pulled military equipment and additional forces to the site in Al-Mcharafieh neighborhood, on the southern outskirts of the Lebanese capital. Ambulances and firefighting crews were also deployed. In response to the deadly blast, Lebanon’s Hezbollah has threatened to retaliate against Israel, writing in a statement that the “crime will not go unanswered or unpunished.” Israeli media has reported that the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu enforced a gag order on ministers as Lebanon and Hamas blamed the Jewish state for assassinating the Palestinian group’s deputy leader. The Netanyahu’s office is said to have specifically instructed ministers not to be interviewed or make any references to the assassination as Israeli police were reportedly put on high alert and told to get ready for rocket attacks and infiltration. Citing US and Israeli officials, American media claimed that Israel did not notify Washington before the strike was conducted, noting Israeli leadership informed the Biden administration about the attack only after the operation had already begun. On a social media post, Yerlikaya said an investigation into international espionage activities led to the operations. “We will not allow espionage targeting our national unity,” Yerlikaya said. The minister said authorities discovered more than 143,000 euros ($157,300) and more than $23,000 in the possession of suspects, along with one pistol and a large amount of munitions. Media outlets reported that the arrests followed an investigation by the counterterrorism office of the Chief Prosecutor’s Office on Mossad’s targeting of Palestinians as well as Israeli activists opposing Israel’s aggression targeting Palestinians. The nationalities of the suspects were not disclosed but they were in touch with the Mossad operatives via social media. The Houthis have been targeting vessels in the Red Sea, those delivering goods to Israel in particular, in response to Israeli aggression targeting Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip since October 2023. Media outlets reported that the agenda of the Erdoğan-Raisi meeting will be the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza after Israel’s attacks and the delivery of aid to Gaza. Since October, Türkiye engaged in a diplomatic blitz to end the conflict, highlighting the need for a lasting solution favoring the rights of Palestinians. Ankara has proposed a guarantorship model to ensure a solution. The two leaders previously discussed over the phone steps for a permanent cease-fire in Gaza, with Erdoğan stressing the importance of the Muslim world adopting a “common stance against Israeli atrocities.” (Source.) Türkiye also warned non-Black Sea states at the time not to send warships through the straits. According to the Montreux Convention, warships of non-belligerent parties can transit through the straits in time of war. But the convention also says Ankara has the final say on the passage of all warships if Türkiye considers itself in danger of being drawn into a war. Türkiye has implemented Montreux impartially and meticulously to prevent escalation in the Black Sea, the presidency said. Ankara maintains good ties with both Kyiv and Moscow amid the war. (Source.) Russia Pounds Kiev With 100 Missiles As Air War Escalates In Deadly Tit-For-Tat The Ukrainian capital of Kiev was pounded by Russian ballistic and hypersonic missiles on Tuesday morning, in a massive series of strikes which also targeted other cities, resulting in a reported death toll of at least five people killed and some 130 others injured. The day prior, Russian President Vladimir Putin had vowed to “intensify” strikes against Ukraine in retaliation for the major Saturday cross-border attack on Belgorod, which killed at least 24 Russians, including children. Later in the day Tuesday the scale of the attack on Kiev has come to light, showing that the Kremlin is clearly trying to send a ‘message’. The New York Times writes that “The barrage — which the Ukrainian Air Force said involved about 100 missiles, including hypersonic weapons that fly at several times the speed of sound — was the latest in an escalating cycle of air assaults between the two countries, as both sides look for ways to inflict damage away from the largely deadlocked front line.” (Source.)
