THE SCIENCE
Semaglutide (commonly referred to by its brand names Ozempic and Wegovy) is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes. It’s a GLP-1 receptor agonist, meaning it helps to stimulate the pancreas to release insulin and inhibits the release of too much glucose into the bloodstream. It also promotes fullness by slowing the emptying of your stomach, subsequently reducing hunger.
Although it’s been around for a long time, it recently hit the headlines because of its rumoured use by a number of high-profile celebrities for quick and dramatic weight loss.
